Bill Leeb’s “Demons” is a deeply moving song that explores the widespread darkness that surrounds us, both in the world and inside ourselves. The song is a honest investigation of the daily obstacles we confront against the dangerous forces in our minds and souls, reflecting the fight to be alive, creative, and joyful in the middle of it all. The tune begins with a blast of electronic noises that establishes a stressful, dangerous atmosphere. The first verse, “I’m still alive,” is performed with rebellious passion, reflecting the ethos of surviving despite the odds. The drums hit hard, with a driven, aggressive approach which represents the pain and violence of facing inner demons. The vocals are heavy with darkness, as if the vocalist is channeling the exact monsters mentioned in the song, creating a frightening and hypnotic atmosphere. Leeb’s use of synthesizers in “Demons” shows a diverse spectrum of inspirations. The song merges elements of industrial, EBM (Electronic Body Music), and 1990s techno to create a sound that is both nostalgic and futuristic. The synthesizers twist and turn, reflecting the subject matter’s chaotic character, while the crushing beats keep the intensity up and the listener excited. At 2:46, the tune takes an unexpected turn with the addition of ambient sections that sound like Ozric Tentacles. This sudden transition offers a small relief from the tension, enabling the listener to regain their breath before returning to the beat. As the song continues, it returns to its groovy EBM origins, driving it forward with a vibrating rhythm that leads to its finale. The mix of influences and journey through many moods keep the listener engaged, making “Demons” more than simply a song, but a listening experience.
