The Shadow Majlis – The Departure
With the help of multi-instrumentalist Ali Jafri, David J, and Rakesh Tewari, The Shadow Majlis’ “The Departure” is a spellbinding voyage across various musical landscapes. The group’s broad artistic vision can be heard in this album, which combines tribal rhythms, folk, post-punk, and ambient soundscapes to create an elegant and immersing listen. “Intro (Elliïakot),” the album’s first track, sets the mood with its intriguing atmosphere and enigmatic drumming, drawing listeners into The Shadow Majlis’ realm. “The Way Home” shows the group’s excellent production and musical ability with its ambient acoustic balladry and mournful sitar. “Love In Flames” is an epic musical journey, with folk influences and tribal drumming recalling early The Cure songs. These elements provide the composition its complexity and depth. “Savage Castaway” creates a melancholic yet captivating soundtrack by incorporating unusual folk-punk components along with a tribal melodies. “Deer In The Headlights” creates an intriguing contrast between tribal rhythms and melodramatic post-punk atmospheres, while “Mazdur” takes a shoegaze turn, combining oriental influences with experimental rock reminiscent of Nik Turner’s solo work. A beautiful song, “Swallowed By The Sky” expresses existential struggle and longing through its melancholic lyrics and expressive orchestration. “I Remember” recalls thoughts of departed loved ones with its sad violin and sad synth tones. “Beshno Az Ney (We Come To Leave)” attracts with its enigmatic folk chants, providing the album’s aural production a sense of mystery.
