Jody and the Jerms – Divine

“Divine” by Jody and the Jerms offers a refreshingly unexpected journey through the soundscape of psychedelic pop. This seven-piece ensemble, led by Jody Jeger on vocals and Niall Jeger on guitars and vocals, presents a track that emerged from an intriguing genesis. Recorded at Safehouse Studios in their hometown of Oxford, the song’s creation was an accidental stroke of genius. The band’s guitarist, Pete, initiated the creation process by humming the main riff after a festival when their instruments were locked in the van. A casual recording of this riff by the drummer, Steve, became the catalyst for the eventual birth of “Divine.” The track marries elements of electronica with heavy guitars, showcasing a departure from the band’s usual sound while remaining true to their essence. Salma and Steve’s backing vocals and harmonies infuse the song with compelling power. Lyrically, “Divine” delves into the theme of love amidst a world filled with heartbreak and adversity. It champions the belief in finding love against all odds, with lines like “Hearts can break, it’s what they say, abandoned dreams don’t fade away” and “I believe you’re heaven sent, my divine experiment.” Jody Jeger’s intention was to create an affirmative narrative about love in a world burdened with heartache. The song exudes a nostalgic groove, reminiscent of musical elements embraced by iconic bands like The Go-Go’s, Belle and Sebastian, and The Cranberries. Its psychedelic pop essence takes listeners on a hypnotic, dreamlike journey, amalgamating diverse musical influences into a unique sonic puzzle of mixed emotions.
