Light – Betray (Track Review)

2008 saw the creation of Light by Camille De Carvalho. He wanted to make an album that was all about keyboards and the enormous diversity of sounds they can produce, drawing inspiration from Pink Floyd and Magma. On this track, the artist uses a main jazz platform to host his progressive rock inspirations, offering a mix of the two music genres without sacrificing quality for complexity, which is a common phenomenon when bands attempt to blend these music worlds. The final result is balanced and melodic, and it sounds a lot like Gong and Magma. Moreover, the female vocals add a Pop and cinematic element to the music, which creates a mood of nostalgia and romance upon listening to this track. Because jazz overshadows the raw sound of rock, the prog elements are less likely to be recognised by mainstream music fans. However, if you try an active listening session and focus on the orchestration, then you realise that a serious Prog rocker is behind this track.
