Hollow River – Aspartame (Track Review)

The track starts with an almost Hip-Hop groove based on the guitar chords in the background and the ironic, playful voice of the singer. I would describe it as a more modern version of Beck’s Loser track with heavier guitars that pay tribute to the famous Emo scene. The artist behind Hollow River, Mark MacDonald, is a songwriter and producer attending Berklee College of Music. His musicianship is obvious from the placement of “smart” musical elements between the different music parts of the song and the meaningful criticism in his lyrics about the reality of society. Of course, no big theories exist here, just smart and funny words that create a “flow” for the song. The audio production is indie-oriented, with no big choruses or major audio effects; rather, it adheres to a set of basic rules while remaining professional.
