Rick Denzien – The Secret Christmas Song (track review)

From Buffalo, New York, comes an artist named Rick Denzien who is emerging thanks to the songwriting that has sparked the creation of his latest CD, RADIATE. This review considers a holiday-themed track called “The Secret Christmas Song” that addresses poverty, consumerism and is an anti-war song at Christmas time. The Christmas bells and the happy 1960s guitar part pave the way for a guitar riff that follows afterwards, probably inspired by the mighty band of The Who. Additional piano parts are provided here in combination with the “Who”-driven riff, which paints a smile on my face as I understand that this is a cool orchestration for classic rock fans. Vocal lines come next to complete the puzzle, but at this point, my listening mood becomes “cloudy” because some kind of effect or the audio mix creates a “metallic” effect that is a little bit annoying to my ears. As the back vocals take over the stage, I am returning to my normal mode and enjoying again the uptempo feeling of the track. I have to give additional credit to the artist for creating an interesting antithesis by using happy chords to address a dark and significant theme such as poverty or war.
