The shocking reality of the classic rock touring line up
Nowadays, when you are buying a ticket to attend a classic band you never know what line up is going to show up on stage…Usually you have one or two original members and other less known musicians just because the original member fired the other members or because the others passed away. The original member owns the registered name of the band and no one else allows to use it. Regardless, if he/she really contributed to the music of the band, this member decides to tour under the legal name of the band. In this case, you may have as a touring line up the original drummer who is in his early 60s and the rest of the line up consists of unknown musicians at their early 20s.
The shock is obvious when you realize that you bought a concert ticket for a band that does not exist, except the original drummer who also does not sing or not being considered a professional musician in terms of playing. Fortunately, many fans are usually doing an internet pre-research to check if the band is still active and who plays with whom… This does not always happen to everyone and the fans are buying tickets without knowing anything about the current status of the band. Therefore, the concert promoters are publishing Press Releases about the show by hiding the details about the current status of the band and they only mention the “new album” of the band with less detail about the touring line up of the band. DEAR FAN, support your favorite band, buy merchandise and concert tickets because now this is their main source of money…However, make sure that your favorite band really exists and it is not just a project of one original member and few less known musicians.
The subject becomes complicated when the group disbanded and now one original member tours under the legal name of the band without any mutual agreement between him/her and the original members. This happens for two reasons: 1. To maintain a permanent source of income 2. To claim at the court (in case of being sued by the other members) that he/she has the right to the legal name of the band because he/she kept the band active all these years when the others did not want to play music. A famous metal band of the 1980s prevents other people from using their name as a product name, store name, etc. because their lawyer advises them that if others start using their name, they may lose the right to own the legal name of the band.
