Exploring The Digital Divide In The Music Industry Lecture Proceedings
10th seminar in the fall 2015 season of the seminar series Topics in the Aesthetics of Music and Sound:
Exploring the Digital Divide in the Music Industry
Abstract: According to the US Department of Commerce, the digital divide refers to disparity in use of the internet and unequal access to information communications technology. In other words, this term singles out people who have no access to or do not use digital technology efficiently. Focusing on rock and roll musicians, how are they influenced by their own levels of skill in – and engagement with – the domain of digital technology? What do the musicians themselves say about their current use of this technology? The project at hand investigates the status of the digital divide among musicians. The author explores these research questions by assembling and researching a comprehensive bibliography, as well as by conducting exclusive interviews with several well-known musicians, including:
Anthony Phillips (ex-Genesis), Collin Bass (Camel), Dave Kilminster (Roger Waters), Eric Norlander, Greg Kihn, Harald Grosskopf (ex- Klaus Schulze), Kane Roberts (ex- Alice Cooper) Mike Howlett (ex-Gong), Suzi Quatro, Mark Kohler (Krokus), Ashburn Millers (Orgy), Acid Mother Temple, Chaostar.
The results of this project constitute the core material for a book with a planned release date in early 2016.
