Refund from Apple’s iTunes?

If you’ve bought an app, music or a iBook from iTunes that you were disappointed by, you can now get a refund, with no questions asked, for up to two weeks after your purchase thanks to new Apple regulations. Customers in the UK, Germany, Italy, France and many other EU countries are able to benefit from the new cancellation policy, according to a report from tech website 9to5mac.com.

Terms and conditions on the legal part of Apple’s website state that: “If you choose to cancel your order, you may do so within 14 days from when you received your receipt without giving any reason, except iTunes Gifts which cannot be refunded once you have redeemed the code.”

Prior to this new rule, Apple support refunded EU customers’ iTunes and App Store purchases on a case-by-case basis at its own discretion. Customers would have to offer a reason for their refund such as a failed delivery or technical problems through its Report a Problem feature. In the US, Canada and other countries outside of the EU, this process still applies.

Customers’ ability to get unlimited refunds on iBooks and, particularly, music may impact the charts. As music website Pop Justice points out, if refunds of albums or tracks aren’t taken into consideration by the Official Charts Company, the charts could be potentially incorrectly inflated by music that is downloaded and then returned to iTunes.

Furthermore, downloaded items have been shown to remain in users’ libraries even after customers have received a refund.

The EU regulation behind the changes, which specifies that customers have 14 days to a right of cancellation or return period for goods and services purchased in EAA countries, came into force in June.

It also states that if the customer is not made aware of their rights by the business, which in the case of iTunes and iBooks could be a musician or author, then a refund can be given up to a year after purchase.
