The mother of a murdered Goth, was awarded an OBE for her work to tackle hate crime

Sylvia Lancaster’s daughter Sophie died after an attack in a Bacup park in 2007 because of her appearance.

Mrs Lancaster later set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to help people targeted due to their individuality.

Sophie would be “proud”, she said. “It’s a validation of the work we do and of the alternative subcultures.”

The foundation aims to challenge prejudices towards people from alternative subcultures, and campaigns on hate crime legislation.

Mrs Lancaster, who carried a velvet bag with a skull on it to represent subcultures, was honoured at Buckingham Palace by Prince Charles.

Miss Lancaster, a gap year student, was kicked and stamped as she cradled her injured boyfriend Rob Maltby

While he who survived the attack by two youths, she died in hospital 13 days later.

Ryan Herbert and Brendan Harris, both from Bacup, were jailed for life in 2008 for Miss Lancaster’s murder and for causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Maltby.
