Christopher Lee releases heavy metal Christmas single
Christopher Lee, better known as the veteran actor of more than 300 films, has released a heavy metal Christmas song. What is even better than the above sentence is that this is not Lee’s first outing on the festive metal song circuit, following his 2012 debut, A Heavy Metal Christmas, which featured covers of Little Drummer Boy and Silent Night, and 2013’s A Heavy Metal Christmas Too which featured a “hellish” cover of Jingle Bells.
His new single, Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing, is a reinterpretation of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing which sings of “glory to the metal king” in between enormous riffs.
Lee, 92, who is clearly having more fun than most nonagenerians of his generation, said: “It’s light-hearted, joyful and fun. It’s a band singing on how metal should be played, the effect it has on the band and its listeners.”
The metal website Blabbermouth reports that Lee has once again teamed up with the guitarist Hedras Ramos, with whom he worked on the 2013 album Charlemagne: The Omens of Death. Lee had previously worked with Judas Priest’s Richie Faulkner.
In Christmas 2013, his single Jingle Hell reached 18 in the US Billboard charts, making Lee the oldest-ever performer in the charts, a record previously held by Tony Bennett.
“At my age, the most important thing for me is to keep active by doing things that I truly enjoy. I do not know how long I am going to be around, so every day is a celebration and I want to share it with my fans,” Lee said.
His single comes in a week that has also seen the heavy metal band Slayer rescuing a tiny kitten, and a Christmas medley by the superhero group, The Avengers.
