Gwar’s Dave Brockie aka Oderus Urungus’ cause of death revealed


The lead singer of the band passed away on March 23 earlier this year in Richmond, Virginia. It has now been announced by the State Medical Examiner’s Office that the 50-year-old passed away because of an accidental heroin overdose, reports CBS. A public memorial for the frontman will be held at the band’s annual Gwar-B-Q on August 16 in Richmond. The band also plan to build a monument to Brockie in Richmond.

Brockie’s death was announced by the band’s manager, Jack Flanagan, who wrote a statement which read: “It is with a saddened heart, that I confirm my dear friend Dave Brockie, artist, musician, and lead singer of GWAR passed away at approximately 6:50 p.m. EST Sunday, March 23, 2014. His body was found Sunday by his bandmate at his home in Richmond, VA. Richmond authorities have confirmed his death and next of kin has been notified. A full autopsy will be performed.”

TMZ reported that Brockie’s was found sitting upright in a chair. CBS reports that police investigators found evidence of heroin use at the time, but that Brockie’s cause of death was not confirmed until after toxicology tests.

Known for their outrageous costumes and prosthetics, Gwar released their 13th album in 2013 and mark their 30th anniversary this year. According to Gwar’s mythology, Oderus Urungus is 43 billion years old, and was assembled on a planet called Scumdogia. He wields a sword called Unt Lick.
