David Lee Roth Sings ‘California Girls’ With the Beach Boys’ Mike Love

David Lee Roth joined the Beach Boys’ Mike Love for a lively performance of “California Girls” at the 21st Ella Awards in Beverly Hills on Thursday night. The Huffington Post reports that Roth had traveled to the event from Tokyo to help the Society of Singers honor Love. Sometime-Beach Boy John Stamos served as the evening’s host and joined in the song on guitar.

Roth covered the summertime staple (which Love co-wrote with Brian Wilson) as a single for his 1985 debut solo, two decades after the Beach Boys made it a hit. The two had never performed the song together before.

“I’m supposed to make a small address here,” Roth told the crowd before launching into the song. “I don’t know how small this can be – these are clearly mentors. If you tear open in the first Van Halen album, beach sand falls out. We picked up the ball a few summers after you fellas.”
