Soundgarden to Tour in 2014 Without Matt Cameron

Soundgarden will hit the road again next year, but drummer Matt Cameron will be taking a temporary break from playing live with them due to his commitments as Pearl Jam’s drummer, Cameron announced today (Nov. 15) in a statement on Soundgarden’s website.

“I will be taking 2014 off from Soundgarden touring due to prior commitments promoting [PJ’s album] “Lightning Bolt” with my brothers in Pearl Jam and the desire to have more time at home with my family,” Cameron says in the Soundgardenworld.com posting. “I am trying to balance the many twists and turns of my awesome music career. This is temporary. I am still an active member of Soundgarden.”

So far Soundgarden has only announced a handful of 2014 tour dates: Lollapalooza Chile, Argentina and Brazil in the spring plus a trio of German concerts in June. Cameron, in his statement, explains that his SG bandmates, “Chris, Ben, Kim and I are in the process of finding the perfect substitute for the upcoming Soundgarden dates in 2014.”

It’s been a busy time for Soundgarden since it reformed in 2010, with regular tours and 2012 studio album “King Animal.” It’s been twice as busy for Matt Cameron, who has also been Pearl Jam’s drummer since 1998.

There has been no word yet on Pearl Jam’s plans for next summer, but the group’s new album, “Lightning Bolt,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last month, and the band is currently in the midst of a North American arena tour in support of the release. The second leg of that tour begins tonight in Dallas.
