Baroness on recovering from devastating 2012 bus crash: ‘We just need to get the fuck on’

Baroness frontman John Baizley has spoken about his and his band’s recovery from a near fatal bus crash, which happened last year (2012). Baizley was one of nine people injured in August of last year when a tourbus carrying the metal band crashed just outside Bath. The vehicle, which was carrying nine passengers, fell 30 feet over a viaduct. Seven people were taken to Royal United Hospital in Bath with minor injuries, but two were been more seriously injured and were taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

peaking to NME in a new interview in this week’s issue, available digitally and on newsstands now, Baizley says he remembers the crash vividly. “I was awake, alert and aware,” he says. “I had the misfortune of being up front while this was happening. We lost our brakes at the top of a two-mile hill with a 12 per cent downgrade. We had no brakes for just over two minutes. Just winding down a very thin road… and at the bottom, nothing but a viaduct. And it was 30 feet to the bottom. I remember every second of running down that road. I remember each second that we were airborne – all four wheels off the ground. I remember seeing the tops of trees. And I remember the moment of impact.” However, despite two band members quitting after the crash and Baizley requiring extensive surgery to mend his arm, Baroness will return to the UK to play live in October. Speaking about the gigs, the lead singer admits he is nervous. “I am super keen. There will obviously be some residual fear and anxiety and the only way we are able to move past that is by engaging it head on. We just need to get the fuck on.”
