Jon Bon Jovi Speaks Out on Drummer Tico Torres’ Surgery

“It was his desire to perform,” said the Bon Jovi leader of the 59-year-old drummer, who had planned to play through the pain.
Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres is recovering from an emergency appendectomy that postponed a scheduled show in Mexico City earlier this week.

In a statement addressed to fans on the group’s website, band leader Jon Bon Jovi reported that Torres is “in the care of his doctors at the American British Cowdray Hospital.”

“We’d like to thank the doctors, nurses and all the hospital staff who helped our friend through through this difficult time,” he wrote. “We’ll remain here with Tico in Mexico City and see him through his release.”

He added that he and keyboardist Dave Bryan spent the entire day at the hospital, and communicated a message from Torres to the fans.

“He wants everyone to know that it was his desire to perform,” Bon Jovi said.

The 59-year-old Woodbridge, N.J., native’s work ethic is so strong, he intended to take the stage that night despite being in pain.

“He even promised the doctors he would come back for the surgery right after the show, but the doctors prevailed,” he said.

As always, the singer acknowledged the fans who “make great efforts and travel from around the world to see us on tour.”

“It remains our desire to give you the best that we have every night,” he continued. “We are sorry for any inconvenience this sudden change of plans may have caused.”

Bon Jovi promised that all dates for the tour will be rescheduled and the group’s Because We Can tour will continue through December. Friday’s show at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is postponed until Sept. 22, “same time, same place.”

“On behalf of the band, I’d like to thank all of you who support us through these challenges,” he concluded.

Among those challenges is the departure of guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the tour in April due to a “personal matter.”
