Keanu Reeves Talks Grim Future of ‘Bill and Ted’ Sequel

Bill and Ted fans, it’s time for a reality check: a third installment of the cult-classic time-travel comedy remains a possibility, but star Keanu Reeves says the project has entered a “dark period.”

Reeves, who played Ted Logan in the first two films, recently spoke about the project with MTV and offered some vague, grim details.

“There’s lots of subterfuge and conspiracy theories,” Reeves said. “I might have to do one of those independent press, conspiracy, other-name kind of [statements] explaining why it hasn’t happened yet, because it’s pretty dark out there.”

Reeves did acknowledge the existence of a script, but he maintained that a “darkness out there” is keeping the idea from further development. “It’s that part of the story where it’s looking grim,” he said. “It’s the dark period of the idea.”

Alex Winter, who costarred as Bill in the original films, spoke to MTV News back in March and offered a much more optimistic (and comprehensible) take on the project.

“There’s no drama,” he said. “There’s no legal skirmish. There’s no nothing. There’s me, Keanu, [screenwriters] Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the original core. We built a story. They wrote a script. We’re tinkering with the script to get it perfect. Then we will go get the money. Then we will shoot it. And that’s really all there is to it.”
