Lou Reed receives hospital treatment for severe dehydration
Lou Reed has been released from hospital after suffering severe dehydration. The 71-year-old’s hospitalisation came less than two months after he underwent a life-saving liver transplant.
“Everything’s fine,” a source at Long Island’s Southampton Hospital told the New York Post. By Monday afternoon, Reed had reportedly returned to his home in East Hampton, New York, where an ambulance had been called on Sunday morning.
Reed’s liver troubles were revealed last month, weeks after he had undergone the transplant operation. “He was dying,” Reed’s wife, Laurie Anderson, told the Times. “I don’t think he’ll ever totally recover.” Shortly thereafter, Reed declared himself “a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry”. “I am bigger and stronger than ever,” he said.
The rocker returned to the stage on 20 June, appearing at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. “The other day I was 19,” he told the crowd. “I could fall down and get back up. Now if I fall down you are talking about nine months of physical therapy. ‘Make sure you take your vitamins.”
Reed has yet to comment on this week’s emergency.
