Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon Explains Split From Thurston Moore
Kim Gordon explained the details of her split from husband and Sonic Youth bandmate Thurston Moore in a new interview with Elle, saying her former partner was carrying on an affair with another woman.
“We seemed to have a normal relationship inside of a crazy world,” Gordon said of her marriage. “And in fact, it ended in a kind of normal way – midlife crisis, starstruck woman.”
Though she did not reveal the name of the woman, Gordon said she had been a part of the Sonic Youth world for quite some time, first as the girlfriend of an old band member, then as Moore’s partner on a literary project. After Gordon discovered a text message from the woman and confronted Moore about the tryst, he and Gordon attempted counseling, but “never got to the point where we could just get rid of her,” Gordon says.
“Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul,” Gordon continued, adding that her husband moved out while she remained at their home, listening to a lot of hip-hop (“Rap music is really good when you’re traumatized,” she said).
Though the couple still has not finalized their divorce, Moore has reportedly been seen with the same woman, while Gordon has also begun to date. She also received treatment for a non-invasive form of breast cancer that required a lumpectomy, but not radiation or chemotherapy.
With Sonic Youth on hold, both Moore and Gordon have been working on new music. Along with various art projects, Gordon is working with longtime collaborator Bill Nace on the debut of album for their Body/Head project; while Moore’s new band Chelsea Light Moving released their first LP last month.
