Kerrang! Awards celebrates 20 years with new venue and host
The Kerrang! Awards will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with a new host and new venue.
Sponsored by Relentless, the event will this year be held at East London’s Troxy on Thursday, June 13 with Blink 182 member Mark Hoppus set for his presenter debut.
Hoppus will be joined by Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, who has co-hosted the event for the last five years.
“I’m always excited about hosting the Relentless Kerrang! Awards but this year I am not only excited but also honoured to be hosting the 20th anniversary of this prestigious event,” said Scott Ian.
“And by prestigious event I mean an excessive over-the-top over-indulgent bacchanalian blowout of epic proportions. And I have a new co-host this year, my pal Mark Hoppus. Let’s party!”
Open voting for this year’s Kerrang! Awards starts today via the Kerrang website and magazine. Fans will be able to put forward their suggestions for a number of categories including a new one for 2013 – Best Event.
“It’s been a thrilling year for the music Kerrang! loves,” said Kerrang! editor James McMahon. “Whether on a global scale, or at a grass roots level, rock has thrived in the 12 months that have passed since the last time we all got together in a room and acted like lawless barbarians.
“It’s for this reason that our awards exist. To bestow praise and reward on music which matters, which so rarely gets acclaim from outside its own scene. I can’t wait to see who the fans – who are the bedrock of everything good about everything Kerrang! does – vote to gain immortality this year.”
This is the fifth year that Relentless Energy Drink will headline sponsor the Kerrang! Awards. Spokesperson for the company Sam Grant said: “Relentless and Kerrang! both stand for great music that matters and we’re looking forward to rewarding those special creators and performers that embody it by being part of the greatest night in rock.”
