Beatles collaborator Tony Sheridan dies aged 72

Tony Sheridan, the rock and roll artist who collaborated with The Beatles on their very first recording session, has died aged 72.

Sheridan first met the Beatles during the group’s formative period in Hamburg, Germany in the early 1960s.

Performing under the name Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers, the Beatles – then featuring Pete Best on drums – backed the singer on recordings of My Bonnie, Ain’t She Sweet and When The Saints Go Marching In.

The Beatles were great fans of Sheridan’s, turning up to see him play live many times in Hamburg and backing him on stage.

Paul McCartney has referred to Sheridan as ‘the teacher’; a mark of respect over the artist’s influence on the band. That was particularly true of the Fab Four’s trademark early ’60s look.
