Peter Hook: ‘I want ‘Atmosphere’ played at my funeral’

Joy Division bassist Peter Hook says he was surprised when he first heard the lyrics to ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. Hook says he was “very, very shocked at how barbed and how vicious” the lyrics to the track are.

“It was written very quickly,” he adds. “I only really analysed the lyrics when I came to sing it again, to be honest…I certainly wouldn’t like that song to have been written about me.”

Hook was speaking to NME as part of the ‘Song Stories’ series, where he also revealed the secrets of many of Joy Division’s other most famous songs. He says he remains “very proud” of ‘Transmission’, describing it as “maniacally sung”.

Referring to a poll Hook says he had seem which claimed that ‘Atmosphere’ is one of the most commonly used tracks at funerals while Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’ is one of the most popular songs played at weddings, he jokes: “I really wish we’d written ‘Angels’.”
