Kid Rock Plans to Re-Record ‘Devil Without a Cause’
The 11-times platinum 1998 breakout album celebrates its 15th anniversary in Aug. 2013. Also motivating Rock: having ownership over the new master recordings.
With his ninth album, Rebel Soul, out this week, Kid Rock already has his eye on his next couple of projects — including a re-recording of his best-seller.
Rock tells Billboard that he plans to re-record his 11-times platinum 1998 set Devil Without a Cause to celebrate its 15th anniversary in August of 2013. Part of the motivation, he acknowledges, is to have ownership over the new master recordings of the songs, but Rock says there are aesthetic reasons to revisit the landmark set, too.
“Some of them will be exactly like they were and some of them will have the sensibilities of what we’ve learned playing those songs live for 15 years,” he says. “I’m not going to say they’re going to be better than the originals; that’s tough to top. But I think there’s something special about them that people will dig. They’re going to be the way a lot of people have seen us play these versions live, whether it’s ‘Bawitdaba,’ ‘Cowboy,’ ‘Only God Knows Why,’ ‘…Bullgod,’ ‘Welcome 2 the Party’ “…We’ve twisted them up so much to where it’s very interesting, very cool.”
Rock, in fact, has high hopes of new life for one of the tracks in particular.
“I think we’ll have a monster single with the way we’re doing ‘Wasting Time’ now,’ without any of the samples and stuff,” he says. “I think that could be a really big song. It’s just really cool.”
A show dedicated to Devil… “could also be in the cards,” he adds.
“That seems like a fun thing that fans seem to like with other bands doing it,” Rock notes. “Even though it’s not the most original idea at this point, I think it would be something cool for the fans to see.”
Meanwhile, Rock is also hatching plans for his follow-up to Rebel Soul, which would be his final studio album under his current deal with Atlantic Records.
“Right now I’m thinking I might do a record like I’ve never done,” Rock says. “I might actually go get song submissions and do four or five country tunes, like country-rockers, just get a Nashville producer for those. Then I’m thinking about getting some of my buddies in the hip-hop business to produce four, five tracks of that, getting my old school buddies like Reverend Run, D-Nice, to write rhymes for me. I would not write anything on the record but just do this half-and-half record, country and hip-hop. I don’t know what it would be like. It would be interesting, that’s for sure. It would kind of go out on the weird side and then I could focus on the next Kid Rock record after that.”
Rock says he hasn’t made any decisions about his recording future and doesn’t rule out re-upping with Atlantic.
Rebel Soul, which was released on Monday, marks his first outing with iTunes after a long and vocal holdout. Rock and his Twisted Brown Trucker Band have shot videos for four of the songs and will make a number of televised promotional appearances, including: a Nov. 18 performance at the NASCAR Spring Cup finale in Miami on ESPN; ABC’s Good Morning America on Nov. 19; a halftime performance at the Detroit Lions-Houston Texans Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit on Fox TV; and CBS’ Sunday Morning on Nov. 25. Rock and Twisted Brown Trucker are currently rehearsing for Dec. 30-31 shows in Hollywood, Fla., and a “Rebel Soul” tour that will begin in February.
