BMG Signs Worldwide Publishing Agreement With The Flaming Lips

BMG Chrysalis US has announced that it has signed an exclusive worldwide publishing deal with the Flaming Lips. Through nearly three decades, the American rock band has accomplished the rare feat of garnering critical acclaim while having commercial success both in the US and abroad.
Consisting of Wayne Coyne, Steven Drozd, Michael Ivins, Kliph Scurlock and Derek Brown, The Flaming Lips have recorded a total of 14 studio albums and EP’s, scoring their breakout hit in 1993 with “She Don’t Use Jelly.” In 2002, the band quickly gained an international fan base thanks to the string of European hits that came with the release of the album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.

Among their multiple BRIT and Grammy Award nominations, the group has taken home three Grammys, including two for Best Rock Instrumental Performance (2003/2007), as well as BRIT nomination for Best International Act (2007). Additionally, The Soft Bulletin was named NME magazine’s Album of the Year, and Q magazine names The Flaming Lips one of the “50 Bands to See Before You Die”

Formed in Norman, Oklahoma in 1983, the band’s unmistakable sound draws on a combination of lush, multi-layered arrangements and elements of psychedelic rock. At their legendary live shows, frontman Wayne Coyne acts a ringmaster of a demented circus featuring human-size bubbles, and confetti cannons, and audience members dressed as furry animals, Santas, and aliens.

In 2009, The Flaming Lips released their latest studio album, Embryonic, and followed up with a remake of the classic 1973 Pink Floyd album, The Dark Side of the Moon. In 2011, they began releasing new songs every month, including a 24-hour long song on a USB drive which was embedded in a real human skull.

The band’s devoted following among fellow artists has led to collaborations over the years with Yoko Ono, Neon Indian, Jackson Brown, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Henry Rollins, and Peaches, among others. In April 2011, the band released The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, a record made up solely of collaborations with other artists including Chris Martin, Kehha, Bon Iver, and Nick Cave.

“I’m very excited to be working with the long time Flaming Lips fans at BMG Chrysalis. The passion for the band and the new material we’ve been working on over the last couple of years has been expressed to me by Kate Hyman, Jason Hradil, and the UK office for quite a while.”- Scott Booker, CEO of Hellfire Enterprises

“I’m looking forward to working with such a creative group of writers and helping the band to increase the value of their songs. The coolest job in the world is where you get to work with The Flaming Lips.”- Kate Hyman, Senior SVP, Creative, BMG Chrysalis US

The Flaming Lips are currently at work on a new album scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2013.
