Apple to develop a streaming music service?
Apple has plans to develop a service that sends streams of music customised to users’ tastes, competing with internet radio services such as Pandora in the US, according to reports.
The New York Times cites three people that have been briefed on the matter, saying that Apple is in the early stages of seeking direct licenses with record labels for the service.
Like Pandora, Apple’s radio service would have advertising, carried through Apple’s iAd platform.
Apple’s late chief executive Steve Jobs dismissed calls for Apple to offer music subscription services, on a number of occasions saying that most consumers did not want to rent songs.
But with the development of music streaming services like Spotify and others, Apple’s iTunes approach to selling songs could well be set to expand.
