Charlie Sheen Honors Slash, Slams Axl Rose at Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony
The “Anger Management” star troublemaker paid tribute to the Guns N’ Roses guitarist alongside Myles Kennedy and Steven Adler. Hollywood Blvd. was mobbed on Tuesday as scores of Slash fans, friends and family gathered to watch the famous guitarist receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the Hard Rock Café.
Among those honoring the longtime L.A. resident and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer were musician Myles Kennedy, who sings on Slash’s latest solo album The Apocalyptic Love, Guns N’ Roses bandmate Steven Adler and close pal and habitual headline-grabber Charlie Sheen, who had more than a few memorable things to say as guest speaker and didn’t exactly shy away from taboo topics like GNR lead singer Axl Rose.
“It’s quite fitting that Slash is getting a star on the very street Axl Rose will one day be sleeping on,” Sheen cracked. The Anger Management star got serious, too, giving due respect to his years of friendship with Slash.
Mentions of the guitarist’s many musical projects — from Guns N’ Roses to Slash’s Snakepit to Velvet Revolver — reads like a who’s who of hard rock and it’s no wonder: Slash has shaped the sound of the genre’s favorite instrument as few other shredders have.
The proof was in a post-star dedication acoustic performance and Q&A, conducted by Kennedy. But first, the duo played “Back from Cali,” from Slash’s self-titled solo album, Fallen to Pieces, from Velvet Revolver’s debut Contraband, and “Not For Me” from The Apocalyptic Love.
Asked how the lyrics to “Not For Me” came about, Kennedy said they were “inspired by a conversation I had with Slash about starting over after reaching a threshold with some bad habits.”
For the grand finale, they performed the GNR classic “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” which prompted former drummer Adler to hop up onstage and pump up the crowd.
“It turned out to be really great,” Slash said of the event. “It’s such a great accomplishment. I’m overwhelmed.”
