The Mars Volta Announces New Album ‘Noctourniquet’

Grammy-winning prog-rockers the Mars Volta’s upcoming sixth album, “Noctourniquet,” will see a March 27 release on Warner Bros.

Like previous Mars Volta records, “Noctourniquet” will be a concept album revolving around a defined narrative. Written by band co-founders Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, with lyrics by Bixler-Zavala, details on the storyline are sparse but promise elements of “1980’s U.K. alt-rockers The Godfathers, Superman comic nemesis Solomon Grundy, and the Greek myth of Hyacinthus,” according to a release. Meanwhile, the track “Zed and Two Naughts,” reportedly off the new album, will be featured in the soundtrack for the video game
“MLB 12: The Show.”

The Mars Volta’s last effort, 2009’s “Octahedron,” debuted and peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it spent five weeks, and has sold 83,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The announcement follows another big one involving Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala: They will reunite with their previous band, the influential post-hardcore group At The Drive-In, at Coachella this April.
