Info about the new Mastodon album

1 min read

With every album they release, Atlanta’s Mastodon become a shade more accessible to their fans and none more so than on their fifth release, The Hunter: the band’s stab at mainstream recognition.

And, with the record currently residing within the Top 10 in the OCC midweeks, this could be it.

The Hunter is the band’s punchiest release yet from, with the longest track clocking in at just under six minutes – a far cry from the proggy experimentations on Catch The Sky or Remission – and for some, this will prove a welcome progression.

Restraint is also displayed in the vocals, with less guttural screaming – an influence perhaps of producer Mike Elizondo – who is best known for his work with the likes of Dr. Dre and Maroon 5.

However although efforts have clearly been made to package the band as listener friendly – the result is never at the expense to the group’s core sound, with mind melting riffs and heavy, tight drumming treading the fine line between hardcore and metal.

An aural treat for long-time fans, while a good introduction for first time listeners – this is Mastodon lite and all the better for it.
