Could Dark Side Of The Moon eclipse four decades on release by finally topping the UK album charts?

Pink Floyd’s classic Dark Side Of The Moon has moved to the top of Amazon’s pre-orders chart three months before its reissue, suggesting it may finally become the UK’s number-one album, 38 years after its original release.

The 1973 album peaked at number two, though it topped the charts in the US and indeed re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 US charts at number 49 this week.

EMI’s ambitious September 26 re-release in a six-disc Immersion boxed set and two-disc Experience set, as well as a collectors’ vinyl LP and various digital formats, is now generating strong consumer interest.

While Amazon’s pre-order charts are not a surefire predictor of success, they have been a sound guide this year so far, with Adele’s 21, Arctic Monkey’s Suck It And See, Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way all reaching the summit, and a number of others making it to number two during the long domination of the chart by Adele.

Dark Side Of The Moon is also moving up the HMV pre-order charts, rising from seven to six this week, having moved from 12 to seven the previous week.

The campaign for the reissue is similar to EMI’s handling of The Beatles’ catalogue and will include unreleased music, collectors’ boxed sets, the complete studio recordings remastered and a new single album best-of.

It will be available in a variety of formats, from CD to iPhone Apps, and is intended to appeal to everyone from devoted followers to potential new fans.
