At Sunrise Records Record Store Day celebration, live events will play out at the flagship 336 Yonge Street location, one of the only record stores still beating in the heart of Torontos once-iconic music hub. Record Store Day, now a global event, is a single day celebration of the unique culture surrounding independently owned record stores worldwide with Ontarios own Sunrise Records as one its largest supporters. This years event on Saturday April 16th, 2011, will be the biggest in its three-year history.
It s a great day for music in Ontario, says Tim Baker, head buyer for Sunrise Records and Vice-Chairman of the Music Monitor Network. You just have to come out for Record Store Day to see that this business still has a strong pulse. That will be evident at any one of the 15 Sunrise Records locations when the doors open an hour early at 9am for loyal customers clamoring to get their hands on some rare and exclusive CDs, LPs, and 7, 10 and 12 vinyl singles that will not be available in national chains or department stores.
This year, more artists and labels have come to the table than ever before. The extensive list includes hot list bands like Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab For Cutie, City And Colour and heavy-hitters Springsteen, Dylan, Hendrix, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Rush and many more.
Record Store Day is about focus and support for the indies: one that can arguably be looked upon as the industry’s heart and soul. Record Store Day;s official spokesperson, Ozzy Osbourne, agrees.
