Phil Collins Retiring After 40 Years In Music
Phil Collins is retiring from music after more than 40 years in the business.
The 60-year-old rocker is stepping away from the limelight and hoping to lead a more private life in his current home in Switzerland.
In an interview with the UK version of FHM Magazine, Collins cited health problems as his main reason for leaving the music industry behind. He also added that listeners seem to have grown sick of him.
“I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this’,” Collins said. “I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.”
The Genesis star and successful solo artist says he has developed several health problems over the years, including hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, which he attributes to a lifetime spent playing live shows and hunched behind a drum set.
The Oscar and seven-time Grammy Award winner wants to give his full attention to his family, including his two sons from his third wife Orianne Cevey, whom he divorced four years ago.
“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,” he says.
Collins is already working on an exit strategy, joking to FHM that he will probably just go on a mysterious biking trip and never return.
“That would be a great way to end the story, wouldn’t it?”
