BAD MACHINE…The City Surfers !
Interview with Masa
1. Hallo guys, let me know about your bio. I’ve read a lot at MySpace but I want the whole story in your own words…
Masa: OK.We Started at 1999, with different guitarplayer. We recorded some tunes and send out that stuff to small labels and Deadbeat records (L.A based punklabel) was only interested one. After first album “rip your heart” we started to book shows outside of finland by ourselves. First 2-eurotours were book by me and Tom/ Deadbeat rec΄s booked us to west-coast/ U.S.A at 2004. With hard work we started to get some contacts and all things (booking, record releases etc..) are more simple now. Of course we are not famous and thats not the point, but every now and then there΄s good crowded show and it keeps us doin this thing. There been cool things like playin with Radio Birdman, Roy Loney (ex-Flamin Groovies), Zeke, Texas Terri Bomb, Adam West, some of them been our hero΄s from point we started. Story goes on. We did long Eurotour april/may of this year and it was last one so far with original drummer Aki. We start with new guy after summer and there΄s some shows booked already in finland and germany.
2. You have played many times both in Europe & USA. What’s the differences between the people and the market?
M:In u.s.a only once. 9-shows at west-coast 2004. In Europe a LOT! People are basically same. They are nice or they are not or they just ignorant. In u.s.a theres a lot people who dont know finland. They think we are russians, but NOT everybody of course.
3.Your latest album Surfin’ In The City is a mix of glam , garage, hard rock and I don’t know what else! How you combine these influences in one band?
M:Not glam. Not music wise, definitely not appearance wise. I like t-rex and old david bowie but you cannot hear it in our music. Anyway we try to take influences from all good music, every band should. Hopefully we got good mix someday. Problem is that you are deaf for your own stuff and it΄s hard to make decent album without good producer, but we keep on tryin.
4.What about your latest CD artwork, the surfin freak in the city?
M:It΄s made by our friend from Belgium/ Liege. Check out more of his brilliant artwork at http://www.myspace.com/llcooldish
5. What were the main influences for your latest album in musical or personal level?
M:True guitarheros like Deniz Tek in musical level. Bombay Gin at personal level.
6. Are you satisfied from the whole result?
M:I΄m satisfied that somebody was interested to released that stuff. Thanks to Alberto/nicotine records and Gallo/ Tornado ride. We have get some good reviews so no reason to complain.
7. According to your past, you’re still insisting on releasing your stuff both in Cd & vinyl format. Are there any plans from your latest album too?
M:It΄s out on vinyl by Tornado ride records/ italy.
8. Are you in touch with today’s music scene in Finland ? Any comments about it?
M:Yes, im in touch and i know lot of people who dont want to know me.. weird is that people seems to have 2-4 different bands same time. Makes no sense. There΄s 2-indie label who are doin allright. Rest are crawling.
9. Do you have any goals as an arist for the next 10 years?
M:Just keep on doin this.
10. Describe in a few words your live appearances…
M: Sometimes very energy. Check it out someday. More info www.badmachine.fi thanks for interwiew!!
