KINJIRU – The Industrial Experience

Q1. Please introduce the band / yourself to our audience.

Roger Bradshaw (Multi-Instrumentalist): My name is Roger B and I am the singer, guitarist, bassist, producer and literally everything else behind Kinjiru

Q2. What is the concept behind the band?

RB: The main idea was to combine two high energy types of music and see what I could come up with. So, by mixing metal and dance / trance (with maybe a bit of punk here and there) you end up with Kinjiru!

Q3. What your latest music release?

RB: That would be the ‘4D EP’ which is available via all major digital music platforms.

Q4. Do you think that Industrial is a sufficient term to describe your music?

RB: Hmm. Yes and no – I can see where that parallel might be drawn but there is lot more organic bass and guitar than you might find in an Industrial project.  I’m happy for people to class it however they like as long as they are listening!

Q5. How do you create/record your music?

RB: Oh lord, I wish I had a simple answer for that! Sometimes I come up with a riff idea and record myself singing it on the voice recorder on my phone so I don’t forget it, other times I’ll be jamming to a drum beat and hit on a beast of a riff, other times it will start with a vocal line…

As soon as I have a solid idea, I get the basics recorded ASAP and go from there

Q6. How does it sound a live performance of Kinjiru?

RB: Well, with this being a studio project at the moment, that’s a tough one to answer.  When it does go out live, it will be seven piece band performing in a sex dungeon stage set so it will definitely be an experience!

Q7. What are your main influences as a person and musician?

RB: God, there have been so many! My absolute heroes are Dave Meniketti (Y&T) for his guitar playing, Eddie Van Halen for the same reason and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister who is the best living frontman out there.

Q8. How do you deal with the current status of the music industry?

RB: Well, my music is on all the same platforms as all the major artists and it cost very little to arrange the distribution to those sites.  Back in the 80s, 90 and 00s when Virgin, HMV and  other record stores were still going strong, you had to have a record company’s clout or a distribution deal in place to have your music rubbing shoulders with the big bands on the racks.  Now, anybody can be on iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, etc.

In addition to digital distribution, Social Media has opened up new avenues and ways for bands to promote themselves globally whereas before, it would take a whole evening just to properly flyer your local area, so there are many, MANY positives. People just have to work out how to exploit the different media.

Q9. What type of hardware/software do you use to create/record your music?

RB: I am lucky in that I have my own setup so I can record any time I like and I am also one of  those annoying multi-instrumental types so I can lay down guitar, bass, keys or whatever as and when I get the inspiration.  My main recording application is Ableton Live Pro and I use Sony Sound Forge for mastering.

Gear-wise, I have four Jackson electric guitars in different tuning and two Charvel guitars, also in different tunings.  I also have a Peavey Millenium bass, a Squire dreadnought acoustic, a MIDI keyboard and various percussion instruments!

Q10. What is the influence of the comic on your image?

RB: LOL 🙂 That little guy is the Voodoo Sex Doll as sung about in track 4 of the ‘4D EP’
