The U.K. Government Is Adding Age Ratings to Music Videos…

The U.K. government is teaming up with the British Board of Film Classification to add age advisory ratings to music videos. The news was announced by British Prime Minister David Cameron during a speech. A pilot ratings program will commence on October 1st, lasting around three months. Ratings will be added to VEVO and YouTube music videos in the U.K.

Sony, Warner, and Universal say they support the measure. Labels will voluntarily submit ratings for the ages of 12, 15 or 18. Users will be able to filter videos by rating.

Cameron said:

“…bringing up children in an internet age, you are endlessly worried about what they are going to find online… From October, we’re going to help parents protect their children from some of the graphic content in online music videos by working with the British Board of Film Classification, Vevo and YouTube to pilot the age rating of these videos…”
