Music Sector Calls On Commission To Tackle Burdens When Travelling With Instruments Containing Ivory

In an open letter 5 associations in the music sector – FIM, EILA, CAFIM, AEC and Pearle* – urge the European Commission to address the concerns of the music and performing arts sector in bilateral talks to the U.S. authorities on the margins of the next CITES Standing Committee held on 7-11 July 2014 in Geneva.

For musicians, orchestras and other music ensembles it is getting more and more difficult to travel to the United States with musical instruments containing small parts of ivory or other protected species. The U.S. authorities adopted stricter rules which come at a time when the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) decided to ease the travel with those instruments by creating a special musical instrument certificate for travelling purposes.
