David Cameron hunts for new band after being banned from listening to The Smiths

Attending an event to celebrate the UK music industry’s highest ever share of global sales, the Prime Minister met artists including Katie Melua and Chase And Status.

He said: “I’m a huge music fan but obviously it’s been something of a music crisis year for me because Morrissey and Johnny Marr have said I’m not allowed to listen to The Smiths any more, so I’ve had to find some other stuff I am allowed to listen to.”

The Prime Minister was asked to stop listening to The Smiths after the band’s songwriters said they were embarrassed by his mentions of his love for the band.

In 2010 Johnny Marr forbade the Prime Minister from liking his music and recently said he would rather Mr Cameron didn’t know any Smiths songs at all than say he liked them. Morrissey also published a statement in 2010 attacking the Prime Minister and his support for foxhunting.

The event in London on Wednesday night was held to celebrate the prominent position of the UK in the music industry – which has seen the UK claim the world’s top-selling album for five of the past six years, being beaten once by US rapper Eminem.
