The piece begins in a way that is similar to the tuning of a piano, with a slow build of minimal sounds that move towards higher frequencies. This creates an unusual sense of anticipation. As the vocals enter, the track moves in a slow, dark pop direction, at times entering avant-garde areas, while post-rock elements add another layer to its character, which is otherwise difficult to classify. The vocals themselves are warm, although somewhat ritualistic. The backing harmonies carry a unique 1960s style, giving the song an unexpected connection to the past. At around the 2:20 mark, neoclassical harmonies enter the arrangement and fit in seamlessly with the existing instrumentation. Rather than destroying the mood, they deepen the track’s immersive character, pushing the composition further away from conventional pop structures. There are also moments when the electronic atmosphere recalls the more experimental work of Air and Archive, although ‘4 Feel’ ultimately follows its own path rather than settling comfortably within any one genre. This is a challenging track to get to terms with on a first listen, and that is part of its attraction. The slow, dark atmosphere slowly reveals more details as the music progresses, creating the feeling of entering a separate musical universe rather than simply listening to a conventional song. The combination of electronic elements, ritualistic vocals, post-rock influences and neoclassical harmonies makes ‘4 Feel’ an immersion experience that becomes even more rewarding the more you explore it. This is a track that deserves to be heard more than once.
