Tomasoso – Desire
‘Tomasoso’ opens with groovy drums, followed by the slow entry of the bass, which creates a laid-back rhythm as the guitars join in, bringing elements of dub and stoner rock to the arrangement. The song builds slowly, and the vocals arrive later, introducing a character with a Nick Cave-like quality, who tells melancholic, mature stories, giving the track a darker personality. The song initially seems slightly strange, but repeated listening reveals its true character, especially through headphones. The 1970s-inspired guitar lines add warmth and character, and the performance is so sardonic that it occasionally recalls Frank Zappa, filtered through a more contemporary sound. The result is an unusual mix of groove, melancholy, and understated humour, which reveals more of itself as the track unfolds. What I particularly like is the way the song refuses to rush anywhere. The bass and drums maintain a steady, hypnotic rhythm, and the guitars provide colourful accompaniment, leaving enough space for the vocals to unfold. There is a smoky, late-night atmosphere, somewhere between alternative rock, dub, and psychedelic music. The relaxed performance makes the darker mood feel even more natural. ‘Desire’ is the kind of track that grows on you rather than trying to impress immediately.
