Watson Bradley – Heart Skip
“Heart Skip” opens with a lo-fi production vibe that introduces the song as an underground, almost “homemade” piece. It has a softer alternative-folk-rock feel, with a loose groove that is enough to drive the song forward without sounding anything close to slick or generic. The warm female vocals add a layer of naturalness to the vocals that seem naturally placed within the structure of the song, sitting pleasantly in the groove without sounding too rough or raw. The melody here is also quite strong which makes the song easy to get into. The melodies are radio-ready, but the lo-fi nature of the production keeps the track from feeling too commercial or too polished. Instead, the song has this sort of style, as though you are watching a band play in a small underground venue, and not hearing a polished, overdubbed performance. This is what works particularly well about the song, the balance of the raw production with the songwriting structure. The “alternative” rock base of the track provides just enough energy while the folk influences and warm female vocals add the relaxed space to it. It is a very simple and melodic song, but it really sets itself apart thanks to its artistic contrast.
