Ecce Shnak – Anna O
Recorded and produced by Jeff Lucci, this single was mixed by Grammy award-winning producer Mario McNulty (David Bowie, Prince, Nine Inch Nails, Julian Lennon) and mastered by multi-platinum engineer Kris Crummett (Sum 41, Sleeping With Sirens, Dance Gavin Dance). Ecce Shnak’s “Anna O” is another adventurous piece of art rock that does not want to fit into a single genre. The song begins with math-rock-inspired riffs with a strong Grunge influence, creating an unpredictable and dynamic nature. The unique male/female vocal duet adds another layer, with a satirical, theatrical character that sometimes recalls Frank Zappa while also supporting avant-garde experimentation. The arrangement looks intentionally chaotic despite remaining tightly structured, making each section feel like it’s part of a bigger story. At 1:29, the experimental guitar work takes the song into further more experimental area, before the storytelling vocals gradually return it to the primary musical theme around 1:58. The layered vocal harmonies provide depth, and the clear production allows each instrument to be analysed fully. There is also a powerful dramatic dimension to the performance, which fits nicely with the song’s story of resistance and release. Fans of Mastodon, particularly their more grunge-oriented and experimental side, will find much to love here, while those looking for something different will appreciate how Ecce Shnak combines heavy rock, theatrical vocals, math rock, and avant-garde ideas into one entertaining song.
