Soft Science – Fade
Soft Science, with Katie Haley on lead vocals and percussion, Matt Levine and Ross Levine on guitars, Tony Cale on drums, Becky Cale on bass and backing vocals, and Hans Munz on electronics, create a unique mix of dreamy pop and alternative rock on “Fade.” The tune begins with alternative-rock guitars before the vocals appear and the mood builds, introducing a dreamy Lush/L7 vibe to the composition. As the song approaches the chorus, the stereo field expands, and the uplifting guitar tone, reminding us of The Stone Roses, matches the ethereal vocals perfectly. The vocal approach switches between dream-pop, Fleetwood Mac-like melodic harmony, and the ambient world of the Cocteau Twins, giving an intriguing contrast to the faster guitar work. This is when Fade really stands out: the guitars have enough power to move the song forward, while the vocals stay beautiful and almost flying above the music. The final result is a guitar-friendly dream-pop song that doesn’t trade tempo for atmosphere. The lyrics emphasise the song’s romantic and adventurous style, describing faraway locations, the sea, memories dissolving into dreams, and driving away from things that cannot be seen. The concept of a romantic road trip is perfectly represented in the music, giving the song an air of movement while simultaneously maintaining its dreamy core. It feels like the soundtrack of a coastal drive in which the outside world fades away and only the moment remains. Overall, Fade succeeds because it combines two very different components, soft vocals and powerful guitars, without allowing one to overshadow the other. The atmospheric production is supported by an excellent melodic structure, making the music enjoyable both through headphones and live. A great example of how dream pop can be inspirational while upholding authentic rock ‘n’ roll energy.
