Soft Science – Understand
Soft Science, located in Sacramento, returns with “Understand,” the second single off their fifth album, Sand, which was released in North America on Shelflife Records and in the United Kingdom by Spinout Nuggets. Vocalist Katie Haley explains that the song was inspired by the emotional problems of teenagers, with the chorus penned by Ross Levine, “and I know one day you’ll understand,” leading her to think on her own teenage children. The final outcome is a deeply moving composition that offers hope and comfort to everyone going through a difficult time in life. The music begins with vibrant guitars that recall the alternative rock and dream pop sounds of the 1990s. The arrangement features elements of Lush, and the old 4AD aesthetic, resulting in a lush and beautiful musical world. Layers of layered guitars mix well with atmospheric electronics, creating a dynamic background before Katie Haley’s soft vocals take center stage. Although the song features strong indie-pop melodies, it never loses its shoegaze-inspired life. The guitars give a constant sense of power and movement, preventing the arrangement from devolving into simple pop area. Instead, the melodic vocal lines flow elegantly above the layered rhythm, creating their own dream-pop path while maintaining the composition’s intense emotion. The mix of sharp guitars and gentle vocal melodies gives “Understand” its particular individuality. The production is warm, expansive, and carefully layered, allowing each instrument to add to the song’s melancholy mood without overriding the mix. With its optimistic lyrical theme, “Understand” succeeds as an intellectually touching and musically engaging piece of modern dreampop.
