Sun Atoms feat. Isaac Brock – Narco Polo Remixes

Sun Atoms, a Portland psych-gaze band, are celebrating the announcement of their summer tour with Modest Mouse by releasing two unique reinterpretations of “Narco Polo,” their duet with Isaac Brock. Rather than just extending the original track, both remixes change it into thrilling electronic adventures, each with its own distinct atmosphere while maintaining the song’s hypnotic nature.

“Narco Polo (RemiX JunN)” begins with tribal-inspired drumming until distorted synths appear from the mix, creating an initial sense of mystery. The distorted vocal sounds combine smoothly with rhythmic parts that simulate the ticking of a clock, adding to the track’s dreamy and slightly frightening vibe. Carefully orchestrated panning effects expand the stereo vision, giving the music a constant sensation of motion and pulling the listener deeper into its psychedelic world. Although the tempo remains slow, the layered production keeps the arrangement moving, combining electro and electronica elements to create a groove that feels peaceful and exploratory. Listening with headphones offers an intense soundscape, with each little element contributing to the hypnotic experience.

“Narco Polo (NRC RMX)” takes a different approach, slowly presenting its groove via a minimalist basis. The vocals are chopped and modified till they operate almost like percussion. This results in an intriguing conversation between the human voice and synthetic beats, producing a sound that glances at urban music while without fully adopting hip-hop norms. The stripped-back production works extremely well, allowing repetition and minimal variation to create a hypnotic pulse that is both unique and fascinating.

The two remixes show the original composition’s flexibility while emphasising different aspects of its sound character. One goes into huge psychedelic atmospheres using layered sounds and spatial effects, while the other embraces rhythmic minimalism and vocal experimentation.
