According to the songwriter, “Ghost of the Abyss” is the first stage of the Abyssal Shield saga (Phase 1), involving the listener in a story about modern submarine warfare and the symbolic “ghosts” of the ocean, nuclear submarines, their hidden power, and technological dominance in the deep. The song begins in a symphonic power metal style, with obvious influences from Nightwish, Stratovarius, and Sonata Arctica. From early on, it creates a cinematic and fantasy-driven atmosphere, combining melodic arrangements with a dramatic, theatrical performance that emphasises its sci-fi concept. Around 1:53, cool synth lines provide a change that goes into an almost a cappella section, building suspense until exploding into a full-blown metal burst. This is followed by thunderous drumming and an expressive guitar solo, which add to the track’s epic character.Later, at around 3:15, the cello adds a neoclassical layer to the music. This instrument takes the lead, bringing dimension and feeling while directing the song’s dramatic flow in an approach similar to the electric guitar. Despite some minor production issues with the audio frequencies, the music offers a thrilling and epic experience.
