Sweetheart begins with echoing, atmospheric vocals and fuzzy guitar sounds which, combined with warm synth pads, create a nostalgic indie vibe with slightly psychedelic elements. The early minutes are hazy and personal, as if the song is gently waking from a dream. As the song develops, the guitar becomes heavier and the drums appear to connect with the main theme, recalling the dark influence of 1970s Black Sabbath and the thoughtful spirit of 2000s indie rock. The vocal effects provide an almost futuristic brightness, resulting in a purposeful emotional distance that makes the listening experience appear alienating but intriguing. With repeated listens, the chorus becomes more obvious bringing the listener into an unexpectedly personal and warm space. This connection is reinforced by the song’s strong, expressive guitar work, which carries most of its “personal” weight.
