Traitrs – Dream Drowning
Dream Drowning, produced by Josh Korody (Japandroids) and mastered by Matt Colton (The Cure, Depeche Mode), is a dark look of the silent horrors of everyday life, presented in a professionally created musical context. The song begins with strange, deeply reverbed synths that instantly recall early Depeche Mode, creating an aura of anxiety and emotional distance before the melody takes shape. As the percussion joins the audio mix, the music becomes darker, almost darkwave. The vocals have a significant 1980s influence, with similarities to Duran Duran and Japan, but they progressively develop heaviness and passion as the music becomes more dramatic. This development corresponds to the lyrical suspense, with the voice becoming increasingly powerful as the surrounding soundscape closes in. The atmosphere is crucial to the track’s effectiveness. The production emphasises space and depth, creating a distant, isolated mood that sometimes falls into shoegaze area. The guitar work provides a little odd aspect while integrating smoothly with the synth melodies, creating a post-punk spirit. The result is a dramatic and spiritually driven performance, very intense but dreamy, that often mirrors the sound of The Cure and Platinum Blonde. It is a modern take on classic dark alternative aesthetics.
