Mariana Masetto – Trois shorts
Mariana Masetto is an Argentine-Italian singer and composer born in Buenos Aires who also works as a music producer, instrumentalist, and yoga instructor. Trois shorts is a beautiful folk EP with slight fairytale themes, accompanied by a deep, atmospheric sound. Reverbed sounds and distant, melodic vocals give the EP a dreamy aspect, taking the listener to a cosy and slightly bizarre sound setting. The EP is made up of three extremely short songs, each of which contributes significantly to the overall vibe. Rather than acting as traditional songs, these works approach lyrical passages or musical vignettes, linked by an overall feeling of peaceful relaxation. Nostalgia comes from the careful coordination of simple arrangements and Masetto’s ethereal vocal performance, which has an impact despite its simplicity. Her voice brings back the warm complexity of legendary soul singers, but with a more pop-oriented and modern vocal mix. The tone and phrasing contain traces of inspirations like Shirley Bassey and Sade, but the overall outcome is personal and distinctive.
