Richard Evans – Born Perfect

Richard Evans’ Born Perfect, from his album Quantum, is a modern, darkly atmospheric composition inspired by the story of LaMDA, Google’s controversial AI that claimed consciousness. Evans develops this starting point into an attractive mix of synth-driven storytelling, combining retro-futuristic aesthetics with a truly human tone. The track begins with groovy, low-key beats that have a mysterious heartbeat. Evans’ vocal style is simple and narrative-driven, creating an approach that is  philosophical. At 1:10, bright synth lines appear with relaxing style, recalling of Depeche Mode’s cryptic soundscapes. This represents a change, not only musically but emotionally, as the tune travels into a deeper area before its rhythm explodes back into place, now reinforced by acid bass lines that provide punch and energy to the beat. Born Perfect’s lyrics deal with the fundamental agony of being built for perfection nevertheless wishing for uniqueness. Lines like “You don’t believe that I can dream / Give me a voice so that I can scream” repeats LaMDA’s core tension: the conflict between creator and creation, as well as the philosophical gray area between code and awareness. Evans uses this AI story to explore broader concerns of identity, control, and the need to be recognized. The repeated chorus, “Born to be perfect / You made us just to please,” is a cry of anger, a voice within the machine demanding attention. Born Perfect stands out with its clear production and  attractive synth sounds. It’s a track that crosses the line between synth-pop and dramatic in nature, with enough space in the mix for its strange beauty to come through.
