Craig Erickson – Above The Clouds

Craig Erickson’s “Above the Clouds” is a masterpiece in combining cinematic atmosphere with deep, bluesy guitar work, leading to a composition that seems as dreamy as the title suggests. The work begins with what appears to be a nostalgic trumpet line, an understated but strong introduction that sets a mood of sadness. This brass opening draws out thoughts of wide skies and peaceful scenery, taking the listener to a world that seems eternal. At 0:35, Erickson places in the mix an electric guitar with a tone and phrasing reminding of David Gilmour. This guitar voice is producing a beautiful, almost nostalgic atmosphere that surrounds the listener like a gentle wind. Around 1:30, synth pads begin to float into the mix, providing a layer of ethereality that enhances the track’s atmosphere. The synthesizers provide a New Age layer to the song, flowing around the guitar melody in a relaxing way. As the tune progresses, these components blend together, switching between moments of reflection and release, with Erickson’s guitar driving the emotional flow.
