Zen Smith – When I See You Again

Zen Smith’s “When I See You Again” is a mix of trip-hop, electronica, and dark rock components, resulting in an expressive piece. The song begins with slow, dark electronic beats that set up a mystery style, quickly sending the listener into a world of desire and suspense. As the song develops, Zen Smith’s vocals take center stage, providing a dark and deeply personal performance. His desire-filled voice captures the heart of the lyrics as he sings, “When I see you again.” The electric guitar, carefully wrapped into the mix, offers depth and experimental vibes reminding of U2’s “Zooropa” album. This influence adds a little ethereal sense to the tune, mixing smoothly with the more solid, industrial elements that develop as the song progresses. The post-punk components (especially in the mix), with their raw and gritty form, add to the overall darkness, making the tune sound almost dystopian. Zen Smith’s vocal approach is particularly distinctive, reminding of both David Bowie and Trent Reznor. He switches between quiet, whispering tones and strong, loud vocals, creating a dynamic that keeps the audience on edge. “When I See You Again” is a song that mixes love, darkness, and eccentricity in a way that seems dark as well as aggresive.
